Algernon "Big Al" Quattlebaum entered this world on February 12, 1969, in the Bronx, NY, facing the challenge of being put up for adoption from birth. However, divine intervention played a role, guiding him into the care of Algernon "Pete" and Thelma "Lady Q" Quattlebaum.
Taken in by his adoptive parents at the tender age of two weeks, they became the guiding figures throughout his life. Now, at 51, he reflects on the missed opportunities to express his deep gratitude and love to them. He acknowledges the challenges he brought into their lives and regrets any trouble caused.
Despite encountering hardships and the complexities of fatherhood, Algernon cherishes his two children – a son and a daughter. While his relationship with his son faced obstacles, they are working towards understanding each other as adults. His daughter, once his constant companion, now leans towards spending more time with her mother, a natural part of growing up, as he's been assured that daughters eventually return.
With the wisdom that comes with age, Algernon recognizes the significance of running one's race in life. He advises parents to instill values early, understanding that the impact may take years to surface. Reflecting on the loss of his mother in 1995 and the recent passing of his father in 2020, he emphasizes the power of prayer for the well-being of our children.
Although Algernon initially had no desire to stay in New York, life led him to meet and marry his current wife of over 15 years. Despite the challenges and initial resistance to his circumstances, he acknowledges the transformative power of sticking, staying, and praying.
Looking back on his diverse experiences, from sports to parenting, preaching, backsliding, becoming a chef and business owner, and returning to preaching, Algernon acknowledges the constant presence of God's guiding hand. Grateful for God's grace, he acknowledges that, despite life's trials, he stands here today, not dead, in jail, or strung out on drugs, ready to share his story.
